GoodFreight provides complete domestic and cross-border rail freight solutions for businesses needing a cost-effective, sustainable alternative to road or air transport.

Rail freight is an excellent middle ground, offering faster transit times than ocean shipping and lower costs than air freight. We arrange the train routing, secure the necessary container space, and manage all terminal handling at origin and destination hubs.

For international rail routes, we also handle the complex customs clearance required at border crossings, ensuring a seamless, door-to-door delivery experience. Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between FCL and LCL rail freight?

FCL means Full Container Load. Your cargo occupies the entire shipping container and travels directly from terminal to terminal without the goods being handled in transit. This is the right choice for large consignments or when you need guaranteed capacity. LCL means Less than Container Load. Your cargo shares a container with other shipments and is priced per cubic metre or tonne, which makes it cost-effective for smaller loads. Both options are available for domestic routes and international rail corridors.

How long does international rail freight take?

Transit times depend heavily on the origin and destination terminals. Rail freight from Asia to major European hubs typically takes 15 to 20 days, offering a much faster alternative to ocean freight. For pan-European routes, transit times usually range from 4 to 8 days depending on the distance and border crossings. For LCL consolidation services, allow an additional 2 to 3 days for container packing and unpacking at the terminal. We provide specific estimates at the quote stage based on your exact routing.

Do you manage customs for cross-border rail freight?

Yes. All international rail freight crossing non-trade-bloc borders requires complex customs declarations. We manage export customs clearance at the origin and import customs clearance through our partner agents in the destination country. For shipments traversing multiple countries, such as the New Silk Road route, transit documentation (like CIM/SMGS consignment notes) is prepared to ensure smooth border crossings without delay. Everything is handled seamlessly as part of your rail freight booking.

Can you handle oversized or heavy rail freight?

Yes. We arrange specialist rail equipment including flat wagons, open-top containers, and heavy-duty well cars for cargo that exceeds standard intermodal container dimensions or weight limits. For shipments requiring specific rail gauge clearances or heavy-lift crane handling at the rail terminals, we manage the logistics and route feasibility as part of the service. Provide full dimensions and weight at the quote stage so we can confirm the right wagon type and route viability.

Do you offer dedicated block trains for large shipments?

Yes. For high-volume rail shipments, we can arrange a dedicated "block train" where the entire train is chartered for your cargo. This travels directly from the origin terminal to the destination without being broken up or delayed at intermediate shunting yards, significantly reducing overall transit time. We can also arrange priority container loading on scheduled express multi-user routes. Tell us your volume and deadline, and we will confirm if a dedicated train option is the most efficient solution.
